About this tool

This fuel cost calculator estimates how much fuel a trip needs and what it will cost from the distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency and the fuel price, in metric (km, km/L, per litre) or imperial (miles, MPG, per gallon) units.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric (km/L) or imperial (MPG).
  2. Enter the trip distance and your vehicle's fuel efficiency.
  3. Enter the fuel price per litre or gallon.
  4. Read the total fuel cost, fuel needed and cost per 100 km or miles.

Good to know

  • Fuel needed = distance ÷ fuel efficiency; total cost = fuel needed × price per litre or gallon.
  • Example: 500 km at 15 km/L needs about 33.3 L; at 1.80 per litre that costs 60.00.
  • The tool also shows the cost per 100 km (or per 100 miles), handy for comparing vehicles.
  • To convert from L/100 km, divide 100 by the figure: 6.7 L/100 km is about 15 km/L.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your fuel efficiency to get the fuel needed, then multiply by the fuel price. 500 km at 15 km/L and 1.80 per litre costs 60.

My car shows L/100 km — what do I enter?

Divide 100 by your L/100 km figure to get km/L. For example, 6 L/100 km equals about 16.7 km/L.

Should I plan for a round trip?

Enter the total distance you will drive. For a return journey, double the one-way distance.

Why is my real fuel use higher than the estimate?

Speed, traffic, air conditioning, load and terrain all change consumption. Using your car's real-world average gives a closer estimate than the official rating.
